The Interpreter Dis/Appears. L'interprète dis/parait

The Interpreter Dis/appears emerges from an investigation conducted between 2019 and 2023 by curator, editor, and translator Virginie Bobin. The project centers on professional and volunteer interpreters, alongside state representatives and organizations supporting exiled people navigating France’s asylum procedures. By foregrounding interpreters’ often invisible voices, it examines translation’s ambiguous role between governing authorities and those subject to asylum law. Can translation, within such regulated systems, still enable gestures of solidarity or resistance? Blending artistic, theatrical, and theoretical texts with contributions from artists and researchers, the book reframes debates on asylum while exploring translation’s ethical and political possibilities.
